August is an unusual time of year for stormy weather, but this month there have been two named storms, Antoni and Betty, along with bouts of other windy weather.
More than 600 years ago a far worse storm battered the Aberdeenshire coast and engulfed the village of Forvie in sand. The mighty storm blew up in August 1413 and lasted for nine days. High winds from the North Sea combined with extreme tides, sweeping sands from the coast inland and creating a 100ft dune that engulfed Forvie. Once the winds died down, the village was left almost entirely buried except for the top of the chapel, barely visible above the new sand dune.
