The new ‘Japanese knotweed’ blighting Britain’s homes

A familiar garden plant is spreading fast and leaving hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage

Japanese knotweed has blighted households for decades with its ability to destroy gardens and property.

But now a familiar garden plant is spreading faster and leaving hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage in its wake.

Bamboo is a garden centre staple favoured by households as a natural privacy screen thanks to its rapid growth and tall shoots. But experts have warned the plant can be destructive, invasive and knock thousands off property values.

Nic Seal, of invasive plant specialists Environet UK, said sellers were not legally required to disclose the presence of bamboo on a property, unlike in cases of knotweed, leaving buyers vulnerable to costly repair bills or even legal claims from neighbours.
