The Expanse: A Telltale Series review – Drummer will remember that

Telltale takes a conservative step forward with their first game since the studio’s revival, with a prequel to sci-fi show The Expanse.

After five episodes, Telltale’s The Expanse has wrapped up in inevitable fashion. As a prequel to the TV series, Camina Drummer’s fate was never in doubt, while the starting point it needs to align with in the show has, for fans, always been clear. As such, the main story was destined to suffer from prequel-itus, but the choice-driven gameplay associated with Telltale tries to make the path towards these goalposts somewhat unique.

As pointed out in our review of the first episode, Telltale’s return (coupled with Life Is Strange: True Colors developer Deck Nine) was a largely unremarkable retread of the studio’s formula. It included all the tried-and-true staples, including conversations with branching choices, action scenes with quick time event prompts, and open areas with some optional collectables which might steer the story down another path. If the components under the hood were familiar, it was the space setting and polished animation that went some way to refreshing its tired bones.

This view hasn’t shifted much throughout the remaining four episodes. There’re some notable high points, especially in episodes three and four, but this is mostly a journey only devout fans of The Expanse will get a kick out of. In fact, it finds its footing when it leans into the show’s established lore, rather than new characters who are fundamentally disposable.

In Telltale’s The Expanse, the story centres around Camina Drummer, a prickly, tough resident of the asteroid belt (nicknamed Belters) who starts out as an officer of a scavenger crew. When the current captain’s authority quickly dissipates, however, Drummer is thrust into command – only to discover how little she knows about her own crew and other external forces at play.
