The exact reason why you’re probably feeling more tired and sluggish than usual this month

As autumn brings darker evenings and mornings, our bodies are beginning to feel more tired – as an expert explains how the oncoming wintry months are affecting our energy

There comes a time every year when Brits wake up only to find it’s still dark outside.

And with it, it seems the longer nights are make us all more tired as well. As autumn draws in and the summer fades away, many of us start to feel that hankering to curl up and hibernate, while early mornings feel just that little bit more difficult to get out of bed.

But did you know there may be a scientific explanation for this fall fatigue? Sleep experts say the diminishing daylight hours actually have a noticeable impact on our energy levels, causing our biology to work against us.

According to Lisa Artis from The Sleep Charity, there is actually a hormonal reason why those 6am starts feel more torturous heading into October. The waning daylight hours, the Deputy CEO says, are actually playing havoc with our levels of melatonin – the hormone influenced by light which controls how and when you sleep.
