The suspicion that Americans don’t understand Britain is exemplified by President Biden’s reaction to the appointment of our new prime minister: “Pretty astounding. A ground-breaking milestone and it matters.”
There is a perception from some that we live in a racist country, dominated by white upper classes. There is no understanding of Britain as a multicultural society that has rapidly changed over the past 30 years.
It was Rishi Sunak himself, writing for Policy Exchange in 2014 during his tenure as head of their BME Unit, who said: “While the face of Britain has changed and is continuing to become even more multi-racial, people from ethnic-minority backgrounds have a far stronger association with being British than the white population.
