The Callum Wilson performance that deserved a World Cup call-up

As one of the Premier League’s in-form strikers, the only thing holding Newcastle man back is a history of injury

Callum Wilson does not lack confidence. He is convinced he should be going to the World Cup with England and could not have done much more than he did in the 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa to persuade Gareth Southgate to take him.

Wilson is good enough to play at the World Cup. He has proven that at club level this season and is the first choice striker for a team sitting fourth in the Premier League.

He is in a rich vein of goalscoring form too, with six goals in nine games this season. In short, he cannot be ignored.

Wilson does everything well. Quick enough to stretch a defence, strong enough to play with his back to goal. He is the fox-in-the-box striker who might just win a game for England, whether he starts or comes off the bench.
