The best laptops for everyday use in 2023, tried and tested

The best laptop for everyday use should be fast, light, affordable and uncomplicated. Here’s the pick of this year’s crop, chosen by experts

Buying a laptop can be quite confusing if you just want a common or garden machine, rather than the specialist rigs coveted by graphic designers or hardcore gamers. For a start, prices for the best laptops vary from a couple of hundred quid up to the price of a family car and the machines mostly look identical.

There’s also a fair amount of jargon to get to grips with, especially when it comes to the best processors for laptops (Celeron isn’t something you’d find in a salad bowl, for example, and Ryzen isn’t something you hope will happen when you bake bread). You’ll also have to choose between a Chromebook, MacBook, a two-in-one, portable laptop or gaming laptop, to name a few.

I explain the differences between them in my FAQ section at the bottom of this feature, after my in-depth reviews of this year’s best laptops. But if you’re in a rush, here’s a quick look at my top five:

‘The options presented to you can seem overwhelming, but how much to spend is actually simple,’ says Jason Stevenson, Head of IT at UK marketplace, OnBuy.com. ‘If you will be using your laptop daily, look to spend as much as you can afford. This generally will provide a laptop which will remain useful for a longer time. However, if you will be using the laptop less often then a budget model would most likely be the best option.’
