Anya Zuber had suffered a rare form of cancer, and its return after years of chemotherapy prompted the teenager to deliver three heartbreaking words to her mum just 10 days before her death
A teenager’s heartbreaking three words to her mum just 10 days before she died of cancer have been recalled by her grieving mother.
Anya Zuber was just 13 when first diagnosed with an aggressive, rare bone cancer and went through six years of high dose chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. The youngster from Armidale, Australia, had received years of hospital treatment for her osteosarcoma diagnosis, which returned in 2020 when she was aged 19. Only one-in-five survive the return of the disease, and mum Elizabeth Egan has since recalled her daughter’s heartbreaking words just days before her death.
Elizabeth has since raised thousands of dollars under the Anya’s Wish research project, raising money at the Children’s Cancer Institute (CCI). Anya had told her mum “there’s something wrong” just 10 days before she passed due to the brutal disease. Mum Elizabeth said: “She just said, ‘Mum, there’s something wrong’, and 10 days later she was gone”. Dr Emmy Fleuren of the CCI has since thanked Elizabeth for her charitable donations, the Daily Mail reported.
She said: “We’ve been able to generate, at this point, nine new and unique osteosarcoma cells”. Those cells are used to test the effectiveness of drugs battling the rare form of cancer. Now, work is underway to have the cells target osteosarcoma specifically, though the team says it will need more funding to do so. Naya Landey of the CCI ha said all money raised “goes towards research projects like Anya’s Wish”. Dr Fleuren added: “I know that Anya was dedicated to supporting research to find better treatments for children with osteosarcoma. There is an absolute and unmet need to do something about these tumours and with Anya’s Wish we can do just that.”
