Ten Hag handed four reasons to turn to McTominay as transfer disaster strikes

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been urged to hand Scott McTominay a chance in midfield amid the club’s underwhelming start to the season. Former Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov believes Ten Hag should recruit another midfielder to help Casemiro if he has given up on McTominay. United’s campaign hasn’t commenced as planned, with Ten Hag’s side producing two below-par Premier League performances. A fortunate 1-0 win over Wolves at Old Trafford on opening weekend didn’t fool anyone. And last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur highlighted problems. Those issues have stemmed from Ten Hag’s midfield in a period of adaptation after Fred left and Mason Mount arrived from Chelsea. United have been pushed to sign a second midfielder, a more defensive option, amid strong links to Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch. But with the summer transfer deadline nine days away, there is little sign of Ten Hag adding another name to his engine room. Berbatov has suggested four reasons why the Dutchman should give McTominay a chance to offer Casemiro more support ahead of Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest. If not, how can he fix it?” Berbatov told Betfair. “If he’s getting enough support, then they continue the same way. Or another defensive midfield player. “McTominay hasn’t played yet. He’s someone that is of a good quality and is young and hungry to improve and show his talent.” United must offload McTominay or Donny van de Beek before splashing more funds on a new midfielder. And the Manchester Evening News report that Van de Beek’s potential exit is in doubt after interest in his signature cooled. Erik ten Hag needs midfield support. (Image: Getty)
