Ten Hag forced to act after refusing to call out Antony’s ‘idiotic behaviour’

Manchester Untied boss Erik ten Hag says he will demand more of £85m signing Antony after the Brazilian faced criticism for showboating during the win over FC Sheriff

Erik ten Hag admitted he will need to “correct” Antony after publicly calling out the Manchester United star for his showboating.

The Red Devils cruised to a routine 3-0 victory over FC Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday, keeping hopes of finishing top of their Europa League group alive. But despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring return to the line-up, it was his teammate who ended up stealing the headlines.

Antony was hoping to score a European goal for the first time for his new club but was instead engulfed in a storm of criticism. The Brazilian star came in for flak after he performed a double pirouette on the ball, with no defenders in close proximity – before passing the ball directly out of play.

BT Sport pundits including Paul Scholes and Robbie Savage ripped into the former Ajax star for his trick before he was withdrawn by his manager at half time. And Ten Hag pulled no punches when asked about the moment of controversy, explaining he demands more from his marquee summer signing.
