This crime, while clearly impacting his family and loved ones, have impacted the entirety of Brooklyn, and the entirety of the city and I dare say the entire nation." Because the murder charge is elevated as a hate crime, the defendant faces a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 25 years in jail to life if convicted. Security camera footage captured the moments leading up to the stabbing. An altercation ensued between the two groups after O'Shae's friends were allegedly taunted and subjected to derogatory language, including homophobic slurs. The situation escalated from to a physical confrontation, resulting in O'Shae's death. Lee Soulja Simmons, the executive director for the NYC Center for Black Pride said: "We wrestle with people within our community constantly facing discrimination — not just because you're Black but because you represent LGBT communities.
