T20 World Cup: Rain threatens to ruin tournament’s credibility

Through a combination of bad judgment and bad luck, the T20 World Cup runs the risk of being remembered for its weather. This is not really the time of year when international cricket takes place in Australia – only one Ashes Test has ever started here before November 12 – and La Niña weather system has again been causing record-breaking rainfall across Victoria and New South Wales, where many of the major matches are due to be staged.

Given that La Niña is almost becoming a standard feature of Australia’s spring and early summer, some of this might have been anticipated, but the sport’s national governing bodies have agreed on this slot in the calendar because many have their own bilateral series slated for later.
