Lloyd Russell-Moyle voiced his anger after the Home Secretary claimed asylum seekers are ‘pretending’ to be gay, having said it should be harder to claim asylum on the basis of sexuality
“Nasty piece of work” Suella Braverman is targeting gay refugees because she “likes kicking people who are down” and “thinks she can get away with it”, a Labour MP has claimed.
Lloyd Russell-Moyle voiced his anger after the Home Secretary said asylum seekers are “gaming the system” by “pretending” to be gay. The remark has led to widespread condemnation after the top Tory said being gay or a woman in countries where they face discrimination isn’t enough to warrant being given asylum.
Speaking on the BBC’s Politics Live, Mr Russell-Moyle said: “We still have many countries in this world that put to death people because they are gay. Uganda, a Commonwealth country, has just gone further to criminalise and allowed the death sentence to be re-introduced for homosexuality.
“So I think the idea that the Home Secretary is choosing this example, I think she’s chosen it very deliberately, is clearly to try to divide and rule. It’s particularly nasty and pernicious.”
