Sue Barker lets slip that Clare Balding will succeed her as Wimbledon presenter

Sue Barker has inadvertently appeared to confirm that Clare Balding will replace her as the main presenter of the BBC’s Wimbledon television coverage next year.

Barker, 66, retired from broadcasting in July after 30 years with the BBC. The 1976 French Open winner was offered a three-year contract extension but decided that it would be best to bow out after this year’s championships at the All England Club.

The BBC has not yet announced her replacement but Barker gave the game away during an appearance at the BT Sport Action Woman Awards on Wednesday evening. After being presented with a lifetime achievement award in recognition of her services to tennis and broadcasting, she let slip the news during an on-stage interview by Balding.
