Strictly Come Dancing 2022, Halloween Week results: EastEnders actor James Bye is out

Bye faced Fleur East in the dance-off – the second for the singer, who is failing to connect with viewers

He’s been languishing near the bottom of the Strictly leaderboard for a while now, and on Sunday night EastEnders actor James Bye finally made his dramatic exit from the ballroom. Actually, to be accurate, it was more like a subdued shuffle off the floor, which rather summed up Bye’s extremely forgettable time on the show. If it wasn’t for his sizeable soap fanbase, he surely would have gone much sooner.

Bye was joined by Fleur East in the dance-off – the second time that the singer has experienced that dreaded red light – with viewers saving the likes of Ellie Simmonds and Tony Adams instead. That made it an easy call for the judges, and, after several weeks of fraught Strictly exits, it felt like a fair one too. The Halloween show itself was bonkers; this was order being restored to the ballroom. Well, for now at least…

None of Bye’s dances really set the ballroom alight: he began with a so-so jive, plodded through an Ed Sheeran tango, made an embarrassing stab at Guardians of the Galaxy cosplay, and was wildly overmarked for a mediocre quickstep. But the judges weren’t prepared to overlook the flaws in his Halloween Charleston, which (for reasons passing understanding) had a beekeeper theme.

That meant Bye’s poor partner Amy Dowden was dressed as a bee – or, at least, was swathed in hideously unflattering black-and-yellow frills, while Bye wore plus-fours and had a layer of chalk applied to his face. That didn’t help with the impression that Bye was increasingly too knackered to sell the routine. By the time he was officially told to buzz off out of the ballroom, it felt like a mercy.
