Death row meals have always been a fascination that stems back hundreds of years, and inmates in the US have become known for requesting either strange items that include a jar of pickles, a clump of dirt, a bag of Cheez doodles and a Coke, or full gluttonous meals of chicken fried steak with gravy, milkshakes, and burger with all the sides for a quintessential American feast
“What’s your death row meal?” is one of the basic questions most people ask when getting to know someone.
The idea of a last meal request fascinates us all, and has stuck around for thousands of years. Scholars trace the first ‘death row meals’ back to ancient Greece. While different countries and cultures have adapted that idea to fit their myths and narratives, here in the US, inmates have used it as an excuse to gorge, make political statements, or simply taste something nostalgic.
Because the US is one of the few ‘first world’ countries to still have a death penalty, our inmate population gets to make these kinds of requests. Some states have rules around what people can request, while really strange ones sometimes get denied. Some criminals have ordered some really wild meals over the years.
