Sternutation is common symptom of Covid Eris variant, doctor shares

Eris: New COVID-19 coronavirus variant detailed Several weeks ago, the UK Health Security Agency announced the identification of EG.5 subvariant, which has gained dominance in the US. Dubbed Eris, the descendant of the Omicron lineage is spreading faster than other recent variants, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC). The new Covid strain has one conspicuous mutation which helps it evade antibodies developed by the immune system in response to earlier infections and vaccines. The Omicron spin-off was also classified as a variant of concern by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The ECDC said it is ‘likely’ the variant will contribute to increased transmission in the coming weeks. The good news is that cases are unlikely to reach the previous peaks observed earlier during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the World Health Organization only considers Eris to be a ‘variant of interest’ which countries should monitor. While Eris is not thought to cause more severe symptoms than previous Omicron subvariants, it’s currently not clear whether it’s less severe or more infectious. The symptoms EG.5 triggers seem to be similar to other Omicron strains, with one sign being reported ‘more frequently’, according to Dr Johannes Uys, a GP at Broadgate General Practice. Sternutation, better known as sneezing, describes a sudden and involuntary expulsion of air from your nose and mouth. Dr Uys said: ‘Many people have mentioned sneezing more frequently than usual. ‘Additionally, some individuals have experienced sensitive sinuses and a stuffy nose. Trending Symptoms including shortness of breath and loss of smell seem to be less prevalent.
