Staggering 1,400 serving British police officers have fled for Australia

The figures of UK cops wanting to move Down Under for a new life are huge, after Western Australia’s Minister for Police led a high-profile mission to the UK to poach officers

A staggering 1,400 serving British police officers have applied for new jobs in Australia after a recruitment drive.

The first group have already flown over, been sworn in, and reported for duty this week. The figures of UK cops wanting to move Down Under for a new life are huge. Western Australia’s Minister for Police Paul Papalia led a high-profile mission to the UK to poach officers.

He said: “The response to the Western Australian Government’s recruitment campaign has been extremely positive, meaning WA Police can handpick the best of the best as it unashamedly lures talented United Kingdom officers Down Under. Western Australia is a great place to live and work. Compared to the UK, we have higher wages, a lower cost of living and the perfect climate for year-round adventure.”

They targeted 31,000 workers – with nurses, builders and hotel staff also wanted. Among the police officers transferring is a former Sergeant from Sussex who won a national award for bravery having saved the life of a woman by clinging on to her when she fell off the edge of a cliff during a storm.
