Sri Lankan cricketer charged with sexual assault at T20 World Cup in Australia

Sri Lankan cricket player Danushka Gunathilaka has been charged by police following his arrest in the early hours of Sunday morning at the team’s hotel in Sydney

Sri Lankan cricket star Danushka Gunathilaka has been charged over sexual assault allegations during the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Gunathilaka was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning at Sri Lanka’s team hotel in Sydney after an alleged incident last week. The batsman has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent, with police alleging he sexually assaulted a 29-year-old woman on Wednesday, November 2.

Gunathilaka, 31, has since been denied bail in a Sydney court. New South Wales (NSW) police said the pair had met on an online dating app and had been communicating for a number of days. A NSW Police statement read: “Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week.

“A 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1am. He was taken to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The Sri Lankan national was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court via AVL (audio visual links) on Sunday.”
