There’s nothing quite like basking in the shade during a heatwave – and it turns out that squirrels are no different.
Amid soaring temperatures, squirrels have been spotted all over the United States “splooting”, lying in the shade with their legs splayed, attempting to fight the heat by pressing as much of themselves as possible to a cool surface.
In Texas, north of Austin, a squirrel was recorded lying prostrate on a concrete slab outside a public lavatory in a video posted by officials at a state park. Approached, it rose as if embarrassed, but then sank down again onto the ground, spreading its legs wide.
