Imagine you are in a business class lounge at an airport. Bad weather closes in and your flight is cancelled. You and everyone else in a bad suit and too much hair gel slump at the bar and begin swapping CVs or humblebragging about a recent promotion. That, my friends, appears to be the business model for the social media platform LinkedIn. It’s been in the news this week because a Chinese spy going under various false identities used it to sucker some of our best-connected professionals into handing over vital information. After making small talk he offered some recruitment consultants £8,000 every time they mentioned someone who’d worked for the security services.
