A Spanish government decision to allow the Basque region to compete in international sports competitions for surfing and pelota has enraged conservatives who say it presents a threat to national unity.
The concession was added to the draft of a new sports law making its way through Spain’s parliament. The Socialist-led minority government of Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister, agreed to it in return for parliamentary backing from the Basque region’s ruling party, the Basque National Party (PNV).
The agreement permits surfing and pelota, a court ball game played with a hand, racket or basket, to be played under the Basque flag on the basis that they have “historical and social roots” in the region.
