Spain blames judges’ ‘machismo’ for letting rapists leave jail early

Fury as new consent law, which was passed last month, is used to allow offenders to request sentence reductions

Spain has blamed “machismo” among judges after a new consent law was used to release rapists from prison early.

The law was introduced after the infamous “Wolf Pack” case in 2016, in which five men raped an 18-year-old woman at the Pamplona bull-running festival.

The “yes means yes” law came into effect last month, but at least four sex offenders have used it to leave jail early.

A lawyer for one of the five men convicted of the Wolf Pack attack revealed he was working to get a reduced sentence for his client. A further eight abusers have won sentence reductions, according to Spanish media.
