Smart watch spots early signs of Parkinson’s disease

Smart watches could be used to spot people at heightened risk of Parkinson’s years before a formal diagnosis would be possible, a study has found.

Scientists hope that the new technique, which analyses subtle changes in movement, could help with the development of treatments to be used in the condition’s very earliest stages, and eventually with identifying people who might benefit from such treatments.

However, they said that it was a screening tool for assessing risk, rather than a way to provide definitive diagnoses for individuals.

At present, there are no drugs that can be used to slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s, a neurological disease that causes motor problems and affects about 150,000 people in Britain. People with Parkinson’s can also develop
