Sky’s exit raises questions of competition and credibility as GAA goes in-house

Last Monday morning a message landed with everyone attached to Sky’s GAA coverage to get online later for a meeting. There were no back-channel phone calls to soften the news ahead of time. It wasn’t the type of news Sky could risk leaking out either. This was news everyone needed to hear together. A deal with the GAA, they were told, wasn’t going to work. Negotiations had broken down. For the 60-odd people contracted to work on game days, Gaelic games on Sky was over.

The following day in RTE a similar gathering was presented with an almost overwhelming glut of matches and rights packages being returned to RTE. It almost felt like Marty McFly firing up the flux capacitor and sending everyone back to
