Six former white Mississippi law officers pleaded guilty to state charges for racially motivated torture of two Black men, using excessive force, racial slurs, and planting evidence
Six white former Mississippi law officers have pleaded guilty to state charges related to a racist assault on two Black men.
The officers, who had also admitted guilt in a connected federal civil rights case, were part of a group known as the “Goon Squad,” which used excessive force and covered up their actions.
The men include five former Rankin County sheriff’s deputies – Brett McAlpin, Hunter Elward, Christian Dedmon, Jeffrey Middleton and Daniel Opdyke – and a police officer from the city of Richland, Joshua Hartfield. They all pleaded guilty to charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to hinder prosecution.
The assault involved entering a house without a warrant, handcuffing and torturing the victims with stun guns, sex toys and other objects while using racial slurs. They then planted drugs and a gun to falsely charge one victim.
