It appears there is no stopping our continuing love affair with malbec, with British drinkers spending more on this than any other red wine, according to the latest figures from NielsenIQ. It’s not difficult to see why. Is there a more reliable, fruity, crowd-pleasing red on the high street? Like New Zealand sauvignon blanc, malbec has the advantage of being both accessible and instantly recognisable.

I would add another factor: consistency. Pull the cork (or more likely twist the cap) on a bottle of malbec and it will inevitably fall into the glass with an inky purple hue, will carry the aromas of black fruit – think dark berry and prune, married with spice – and taste soft and supple.
