Labour leader promises ‘bold’ policies but declines to comment on what pay offer he would make to public sector workers
Sir Keir Starmer has pledged Labour will be the party of “responsible economics” as he refused to commit to spending more from existing budgets on public services.
The Labour leader dodged questions on Sunday about how much more his party would be prepared to spend to fix problems in the NHS and education, and declined to comment on what pay offer he would make to public sector workers.
Sir Keir insisted he would implement “bold and reforming” policies to counter what he branded a “sticking plaster” approach from the Conservatives.
But amid a rebellion from unions over his centrist approach to economic policy, he said “of course” he was happy to upset the Left wing of his party if it increased Labour’s chances of winning an election.
