‘Sinister’ sex attack one of ten crimes Met officers committed inside police stations

Metropolitan police officers and staff committed a number of shocking crimes inside their own police stations and buildings, including violent attacks and sex offences

Metropolitan Police officers and staff committed a string of horrific crimes inside police stations, The Mirror can exclusively reveal – including one sex attack.

The revelations about sexual assault, violence, theft and more has led to one former Met superintendent warning that the “sinister” figures showed police stations were no longer safe. Nusrit Mehtab, who spent decades working with the force, added the “mind blowing” numbers were a fraction of what the true figure would be, given the sheer volume of ongoing investigations, and the officers who were never caught.

The data was exclusively obtained by The Mirror in an FOI to the Metropolitan Police force. Of the dozen boroughs that saw officers committing crimes inside police stations, one sexual offence, which could be rape or sexual assault, took place in Brent. Bromley, Havering, Hillingdon, and Westminster all saw violence against the person committed by officers, which could stretch from harassment to grievous bodily harm, whilst there were thefts in two boroughs as well and miscellaneous crimes against society (crimes with no direct victim) committed in others.

Alongside officers themselves committing crimes in police stations, there’s an alarming number of failures to stop others crimes being committed, with a further 146 sexual offences committed by members of the public also in police stations. The FOI covered from January 1, 2017, to April 30 of this year.
