Shopping centre changes hands for £40m

The prospective new owners of the Gyle shopping centre believe they can improve the site to better appeal to “affluent” consumers in Edinburgh.

Capital & Regional, an investment group listed on the London Stock Exchange, has agreed a deal to pay £40 million for the mall, which lies on the western edge of the Scottish capital.

The company already owns shopping centres in Hemel Hempstead, Ilford, Maidstone, Redditch, Walthamstow and Wood Green, as well as Snozone, the indoor ski-slope operator.

The Gyle, which opened in 1993, has Morrisons and Marks and Spencer as its two largest tenants alongside the likes of WH Smith, Boots, Costa and Next. It had a footfall of 8.6 million in 2022. The 50-acre complex is owned by Gyle Shopping Centre
