A 50-year-old swimmer was left in a critical condition by an “extremely rare” shark attack off one of New York’s most popular beaches.
The woman was bitten on her left leg and taken from Rockaway Beach to hospital, as lifeguards cleared the area and a police helicopter searched for the shark without success.
It comes amid a flurry of shark attacks across New York, with two children among the five people who were bitten over several days last month.
The city’s parks and recreation department said after the incident on Monday: “We hope for a full recovery for this swimmer.
