 As far as coming-of-age teen dramas go, few – if any – have been as ground-breaking as Sex Education. Filmed in Wales with a Hollywood budget, Sex Education very swiftly broke out from being the hot new TV show for young adults, to becoming a must-watch for everybody navigating the world through a post #MeToo lens. Following Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey), the pair became unqualified, but impressive sex therapists for their classmates, inspired by Otis's mother (Gillian Anderson) – a professional sex therapist. It was pretty extraordinary, but when season four was released, I couldn't share in the same excitement as other Sex Education fans – not after the last series. For teens like me in 00s Britain, sex wasn't just a taboo – it was shameful. I don't even think my school taught us how to put condoms on a banana. Being a gay teenager was another catastrophe altogether, thanks to Margaret Thatcher's monstrous section 28. I couldn't even mention the word gay at school without fear, let alone ask about anal sex. Consent wasn't a word many people around me had even heard growing up, never mind knowing what it meant and truly understanding it. From The O.C., I learned my type in men is definitely a Seth with a hint of Ryan, but consent? Not a chance. We deserved better, but thank god the generations coming through today have a toolkit we never did. For the first two seasons of Sex Education, I regularly said it was possibly the most important television I've ever seen. What's more, it was funny, too.
