As the nation’s favourite magic bear celebrates his 75th birthday, Sooty’s right hand man Richard Cadell spills all on the children’s favourite’s humble beginnings, sole showbiz scandal and secrets to his longevity
Sooty is quite simply the children’s TV phenomenon that shows no sign of slowing down as the world’s most famous glove puppet celebrates his 75th birthday.
The mischievous yellow bear has entertained generations of children since his TV debut in 1955 alongside owner Harry Corbett.
Since then, the late Harry – who first picked up Sooty in a Blackpool joke shop in 1948 – handed the family business over to son Matthew in 1976 who went on to appoint lifelong and apprentice of the Chuckle Brothers Richard Cadell to be Sooty’s right hand man.
And Sooty has been in very safe hands every since, with Richard working with the beloved bear for 25 years – marking his own milestone anniversary this month.
