Search for missing Brit Aidan Roche ends in tragedy as hiker’s body found on mountain

The family of Aidan Roche says the body, which police have discovered near Grindelwald, Switzerland, is that of the 29-year-old man who vanished three months ago

Police searching for missing British hiker Aidan Roche in Switzerland have found a body near the mountain trail where he was last seen alive.

Aidan as last heard from on June 22 while he was on a solo hike in the Grindelwald area of Switzerland, just two days before he was due to return to the UK. Authorities launched a search for the missing 29-year-old man – with his family and friends issuing desperate pleas for his safe return.

But police have found a body on the mountain, and Aiden’s family says it is that of the young man, who grew up in Middlesbrough, Teesside. Swiss police and the mountain rescue service ceased their search efforts earlier this year after they “exhausted every option” and had not received any new evidence. This led his “extremely worried” family and friends to launch a GoFundMe campaign hoping that funds would generate new leads in the search mission.

Aiden’s older brother, Connor, previously described Aidan as “a character” and someone who can “talk to absolutely everyone and can just make friends with anyone”. Loving tributes have since been paid to the chemical engineer on Facebook, reports Teesside Live. One person said: “I’m so very sorry for your loss. My heartfelt condolences to all of Aidan’s Family and Friends, at this most heartbreaking of times.” Another added: “Sending love and deepest sympathy to you and all your family.”
