Parenthood is expensive and can be overwhelming. In Scotland they try to give every newborn the same start in the world with free baby boxes, and Brits outside Scotland can’t believe it
Cots, nappies, buggies and clothes. When you’re pregnant it can feel like there is so much to buy in preparation for your little baby – particularly if they’re your first. Except in Scotland they make things a little easier for expectant parents with a free baby box that every new mum is entitled to in the country.
One mum, Rachel Clenaghan, unboxed her free baby box on TikTok, which baffled many Brits who do not get the same service. “Every family in Scotland is entitled to a baby box free from the Scottish government. The actual box itself comes beautifully illustrated and I think the whole point is the younger family can decorate it for the new arrival”, the mum explained. She also clarified that this box also doubles as a cot so that a baby could actually sleep in it, including a mattress that fits perfectly inside. “The point in the box is that every baby has the same start in life,” she added.
Rachel showed that the contents of the box included a guide for how to breastfeed and sleep safely, a poem, and a voucher for reusable nappies. She noted that the nappies “were new” as she didn’t get them with her other little boy, Junior.
The box also included bits for new mums like maternity and breast pads, as well as a playmat and tummy time book for the newborn. Books, teething toys, digital thermometers, and baby clothes that fit from 0-3 month and 3-6 month year old babies all featured in the brilliant box.
