Scandal-hit UK prison staffing crisis as female workers keep having sex with inmates

HMP Berwyn, which cost £212million to open, is being “adversely affected” by staffing issues in the wake of a string of sex scandals involving inmates and female members of staff

The UK’s largest prison has been hit by a staffing crisis after 18 female members of staff left their jobs after hooking up with inmates.

HMP Berwyn in Wrexham cost £212million and opened to prisoners in 2016 – but it has since been embroiled in sex and drug scandals, as well as being criticised for its liberal “cushy” policies for dangerous lags.

The Mirror exclusively reported in March how 18 female staff at the jail had been fired for hooking up with inmates. The record figures, uncovered in Freedom of Information requests, come after three of the women ended up in court over the illicit flings The relationships took place over the past six years at the privately run jail in Wrexham, North Wales.

Jennifer Gavan was among the lovestruck guards. She accepted £150 to smuggle a phone into robber Alex Coxon’s cell and the pair were later caught swapping raunchy snaps via WhatsApp. Gavan pleaded guilty to misconduct and was sentenced to eight months behind bars.
