England’s Women are 90 minutes away from the World Cup final and coach Sarina Wiegman is calling for a public holiday if the Lionesses secure glory in Australia
England boss Sarina Wiegman has backed a public holiday for millions of fans back home if her side wins the World Cup.
The Lionesses face Australia in the semi-final on Wednesday morning ready to make history. They believe they can make it third time lucky and reach their first ever World Cup final after losing the two previous semi-finals. But they face a team with an entire nation behind them.
The Australian Government is under pressure to call a public holiday if the Matildas triumph on home soil, despite an estimated cost of around £3.5bn to their economy. Asked if Rishi Sunak should do the same if England win, Dutch-born Sarina said: “I would say yes, I can see all the English people here want it! But let’s do everything to win the game tomorrow.”
She insisted that the Euro 2022 winners have a plan to deal with the Aussie superstar Sam Kerr if she plays, and the home crowd. “We have analysed our opponents really well,” she said. “We will be playing to our strengths and finding their weaknesses.”
