Samsung has set a new record for speeds across 5G (Image: GETTY)Homes that are suffering from dismal download speeds could soon see things boosted thanks to a big upgrade from Samsung. The South Korean technology giant has revealed its latest 5G mobile network tests and the results appear mightily impressive. In fact, what has just been achieved makes fixed-line broadband speeds look embarrassingly slow.Using the very latest 5G mmWave technology, Samsung has been able to produce peak download speeds in excess of 2.5Gbps – at that rate, you’d be able to download a movie in just 15 seconds.Even the average speeds recorded during Samsung’s tests were impressive with downloads consistently hitting 1.79Gbps.As a comparison, the current average UK broadband is around 70Mbps – that’s a whopping 35 times slower than what Samsung has managed using 5G. With a standard 70Mbps connection, the same HD movie would take over 10 minutes to download. What makes this latest test even more impressive is the distance the mobile signal was able to travel without losing its strength.Samsung says it was still able to achieve these rapid downloads even when the device receiving the connection was over 10km (6.2 miles) away. That’s vital as it could mean this technology helps those who don’t live near existing infrastructure.Of course, 5G isn’t anything new with the UK switching on its first signal all the way back in 2019. All of the major networks such as EE, O2, Vodafone and Three now offer 5G but non are able to give consistently quick downloads as seen in this new test.Samsung is clearly showing off the capabilities of 5G technology and it could help people or communities that are still struggling to get fast fibre cables installed in their areas. The Samsung test was performed in Australia and there’s no word yet on when, or if, things will be rolled to other parts of the world.Speaking about the new technology Junehee Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said: “This new 5G record proves the massive potential of mmWave technology, and its ability to deliver enhanced connectivity and capacity for addressing the last mile challenges in rural areas.’We are excited to work with nbn to push the boundaries of 5G technology even further in Australia and tap the power of mmWave for customer benefit.’
