Sale of XL Bullys ROCKETS as breeders try to get rid of dogs before ban

Gumtree has registered almost 40% more of the dogs on offer after Rishi Sunak announced the breed would be added to the list of banned dogs by the year end

The sale of XL Bullys online has rocketed in the last week.

Gumtree has registered almost 40% more of the dogs on offer after PM Rishi Sunak said they would be added to the list of banned breeds by the year end. The site currently has 229 Bully types priced from £500 to £3,500. Meanwhile, Pets4Home has recorded a 22% increase in listings with 819 dogs on sale.

The breed has been linked to at least two fatal attacks in the UK this year and six last year. Some owners of dogs being sold online mention behaviour issues. One said: “I would not like her homed with young children”. Another stressed: “Potential owners must know this breed.” Charities have also been inundated since the PM’s ruling.

Large Breed Dog Rescue in Greenhithe, Kent, had to turn down 25 XLs in the last week. Volunteer Jo Woods said: “Owners contact us and say ‘I’m going to put it down if you can’t take it’. But we haven’t space for a dog that may take months to rehome.
