The sailor was reported missing after setting off from Mexico's Baja peninsular to cross the ocean to French Polynesia. After setting his first foot on dry land after pulling in to the port city of Manzanillo in Mexico, around 337km west of his departure point, he said he was grateful to be out of the shark-infested waters. "I'm feeling alright. I'm feeling a lot better than I was, I tell ya," Shaddock told reporters. He mentioned his "amazing" dog Bella as he thanked the captain and crew of the fishing vessel that stumbled on the Maria Delia for saving his life, saying: "I'm just so grateful. I'm alive and I didn't really think I'd made it". The pair met in Mexico, Bella's homeland, but she kept returning to him so he took her in. But Shaddock has decided to leave her behind after a crew member from the boat that rescued him promised to give her a happy and loving home. "Bella sort of found me in the middle of Mexico. She's Mexican," he explained. "She's the spirit of the middle of the country and she wouldn't let me go. I tried to find a home for her three times and she just kept following me onto the water. She's a lot braver than I am, that's for sure." In heartbreaking scenes, Bella waited patiently on the boat until Shaddock was driven away - bound for the aiport so he could be reunited with his family in Sydney.
