Sadiq Khan dubbed a ‘modern-day highwayman’ over new car tax fees

Christopher Hope says Tories will not challenge ULEZ expansion Sadiq Khan is a ‘thief’ who is ‘fleecing’ motorists and must be stopped, according to a Tory MP. It comes as a range of new daily car tax fees are set to hit Londoners. Drivers as far as Harrow and Bromley will be slapped with new £12.50 per day Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) fees at the end of the month. Meanwhile, it has emerged Transport for London (TfL) will soon issue fees to motorists crossing the Blackwall Tunnel, a key artery in the east end of the city. Conservative MP Lee Anderson has slammed the new proposals and explained it was vital Londoner’s ditch Khan in next year’s Mayoral electrons. The former Labour politician even compared Khan to notorious robber Dick Turpin and branded the London mayor as a ‘modern-day highwayman’. Sadiq Khan has been branded a ‘highwayman’ Speaking to GB News, Anderson said: ‘It’s robbery. The man is perceived as a thief and who can disagree with that? We’ve got the ULEZ expansion and now we’ve got this nonsense. ‘He’s like a modern-day highwayman. He’s like Dick Turpin. He’s out robbing people on the highway. The poor old motorists have enough to attend with in this country with the cost of fuel and the cost of car insurance. ‘Roll on next year we need to get this man gone.’ Angry drivers took to social media to slam the new Blackwall Tunnel charges which will be introduced in 2025. The fees are being brought in to help pay for works to the new Silvertown tunnel which will connect to the Greenwich Peninsula. It appears motoring schemes could become a real election issue with Sir Keir Starmer coming out publicly against ULEZ. A consultation by TfL found that 59 percent of residents did not support an expansion to Outer London boroughs. Meanwhile, Labour missed out on securing Boris Johnson’s former seat in Uxbridge after local Conservative associations rallied against the proposal. Susan Hall, the Tories’ Mayoral candidate, has pledged to axe the scheme if she is elected next May. Trending
