Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup stars called for Luke Donald to stay on as captain after they regained the trophy and sparked emotional scenes at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.
The winning margin was five points, but there was a nervous period yesterday when the USA team went up in a string of singles matches. In the end Tommy Fleetwood was the man who gained the point that settled the contest.
Almost immediately, Rory McIlroy, the weekend’s top scorer with four points, said he would like Donald to stay on when Europe defend the trophy at Bethpage Black in New York in 2025. “I think everyone sitting here would be happy to have him again,” he said in the team press conference.
