Ruthless Newcastle dispatch Aston Villa

Callum Wilson scored twice in front of England manager Gareth Southgate to boost his chances of a World Cup call-up

Gareth Southgate will have to take Callum Wilson’s claim he should be in England’s World Cup squad seriously after he scored twice against Aston Villa and it is time to talk about Newcastle United as genuine Champions League contenders too.

Newcastle have lost just once this season, are now on a three game winning streak and sit three points ahead of Chelsea in fourth.

If you still do not think they are a threat to the established order in English football, you really have not been paying attention to what has been happening on Tyneside since January. They are a club with momentum and money – there is not a more powerful a combination.

The table does not lie and neither does form, and Newcastle look as good as anyone in that race for a top four finish, tearing Aston Villa apart to underline the size of the task awaiting their new manager Unai Emery.
