Russian officer ‘blown up by drone while mowing his lawn on his day off’ near border

Alexei Chernykh, deputy chief of a local branch of the anti-corruption police, was blown up by a drone at his home in the village of Schetinovka, in the Belgorod region just under a mile from the border of Ukraine

A Russian police lieutenant colonel has been killed on his day off while mowing his lawn in a small town near the Ukrainian border, local reports have said.

Alexei Chernykh, deputy chief of a local branch of the anti-corruption police, was blown up by a drone at his home in the village of Schetinovka, in the Belgorod region. The incident happened on Sunday when a drone dropped a bomb onto his property, according to Russian Telegram channel Baza, which is linked to Russia’s security services. “Alexei had a day off and was mowing the lawn”, the Telegram channel reported.

His home is said to be located under a mile from the border with Ukraine, according to a report by another Telegram channel, Bedgorod. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov accused Ukraine of launching a drone that killed a “civilian” in Schetinovka that same day, but he did not name Alexei. He said that the man died of shrapnel wounds after an explosive fell onto his “summer cottage” while he was mowing the grass.

This border area has come under frequent drone strikes in recent months as Ukraine has stepped up its cross-border attacks, seemingly in retaliation for the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ukraine has not commented on this specific attack and almost never claims public responsibility for such attacks. An attack on May 30, which Ukraine hasn’t claimed responsibility for, marked the first time the capital had been hit in a large-scale drone strike since the war began.
