Russian troops flee over pontoon bridges as Ukrainian forces close in symbolic city
Russia’s ministry of defence says it has destroyed the last road bridges over the Dnipro river in Kherson region after completing the evacuation of its troops from the river’s right bank and regional capital.
The retreat marks the end of one of the most hard-fought battles of the war so far and a major defeat for Vladimir Putin, who just two months ago declared he was “annexing” Kherson, the only regional capital his forces have managed to capture.
Locals in previously occupied areas were seen pulling down Russian propaganda posters and raising Ukrainian flags on Friday morning as they waited for advancing Ukrainian troops.
By Friday afternoon, images of Kyiv’s troops inside the city itself were circulating on Ukrainian social media channels.
