Russell Brand and Katy Perry got married in 2010 after meeting at the VMAs, however, Russell asked for a divorce in 2011, with irreconcilable differences later cited as the reason
Katy Perry revealed her ex-husband Russell Brand ended their marriage with a text message sent to her on New Year’s Eve.
Last night, the 48-year-old comedian took to his Youtube channel to issue a statement where he ‘absolutely denied’ serious allegations ahead of tonight’s mystery Channel 4 Dispatches show. Russell, also known as Rusty Rockets, is currently married to Scottish blogger Laura Gallacher, with whom he shares two children but back in 2010 he tied the knot with Firework star, Katy, 38, after they started dating following a meeting at the VMAs in 200.
The marriage was short-lived, lasting 14 months, with Katy saying after the split that the My Booky Wook star ended things via text, asking her for a divorce moments before she went on stage to perform in front of a packed out crowd. The content of the text hasn’t been revealed, but it’s understood to have been a single message from Russell to Katy telling her he was filing for divorce. Speaking about their relationship in 2013, she said: “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
Following the explosive split, Katy told the Sunday Times in 2013 she “got a good knock”. “I was in bed for about two weeks. I was pretty f***ed, yes. It hurt a lot,” explained the star, who reportedly retaliated by taunting vegan Russell with a picture of a half-eaten Big Mac. She continued: “Unfortunately, although I had the outward self-identity, I didn’t have the inner kind, I hadn’t built that up. My self-worth was in someone else’s hands which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered.”
