As well as being a time for celebration and hope for the year ahead, it's also a time to reflect on the past year and atone for any wrongdoings, in order to start the new year with a clean slate. When does Rosh Hashanah end and when does Yom Kippur take place? When does Rosh Hashanah end? Rosh Hashanah ends at sundown on Sunday September 17. Jewish holidays begin and end at that time as they follow the Hebrew calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, in which days begin at sunset.. Rosh Hashanah is believed to be the day that God created Adam and Eve, and serves as a time to celebrate the creation of the universe. What does Shana Tova mean? With Rosh Hashanah lasting until sundown on Tuesday night, you have plenty of time to wish any Jewish friends or neighbours a happy new year – or a Shana Tova. Shana Tova is the shortened greeting to wish a happy new year. It's traditional to hear the Shofar blown over the high holidays (Picture: Getty Images) It's cut down from the traditional greeting of 'L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem', which means 'may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.' A typical greeting to use during Rosh Hashanah is L'shanah tovah, which means 'for a good year.' You can also say 'Shanah Tovah um'tukah', which means 'may you have a good and sweet new year.' Or you can simply wish your Jewish friends a 'happy new year'. When is Yom Kippur? Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday September 24 and runs through until nightfall on Monday September 25.
