Rory McIlroy has played a huge role in the PGA Tour’s off-course dealings over the past year, but the Northern Irishman opted to skip a player meeting held by commissioner Jay Monahan this week
Rory McIlroy decided to skip a PGA Tour player meeting held by commissioner Jay Monahan at this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, as the proposed merger with LIV Golf grows closer.
Monahan shocked just about everybody in the world of golf in June, after reaching an agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF). The groundbreaking deal will see the Tour end its year-long dispute with LIV Golf, and work in unison with the breakaway league.
On the back of the announcement, the commissioner faced a whole host of criticism from players, with PGA Tour members complaining about the lack of clarity and information surrounding the PIF deal.
In a bid to build back trust, Monahan revealed late last month that players who remained loyal to the PGA Tour would benefit from some sort of compensation package, whilst LIV players wanting to reapply for membership would be required to go through a disciplinary process. In a bid to provide further clarity, the Tour boss also held a meeting with players in Memphis this week.
