Rishi Sunak will attend COP27 climate summit in major U-turn

The Prime Minister buckled to Tory pressure and said he would attend the summit – just hours after his rival Boris Johnson confirmed he would go to the talks in Egypt

Rishi Sunak will attend the COP27 climate summit, the Prime Minister confirmed today in a major U-turn.

The Tory leader announced his attendance in Egypt hours after his arch-rival Boris Johnson confirmed he would go, upstaging him.

Last week he had pulled out of next week’s talks due to “pressing domestic commitments” – including the November 17 Autumn Statement.

But today Mr Sunak tweeted: “There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables.
