The Prime Minister faces pressure from the Tory right to row back on Net Zero pledges – but Friends of the Earth say doing so under political pressure would be “inexcusable” as wildfires tear through Europe, America, and Asia
Rishi Sunak is weighing up watering down policies to tackle the climate emergency after a Tory backlash.
Environmental campaigners say doing so would be “inexcusable” and called on ministers to hold their nerve as wildfires grip Europe.
The PM says he is seeking a “proportionate and pragmatic” approach to achieving net zero – the Government’s pledge to slash greenhouse gas emissions.
And Mr Sunak said he does not want to heap “hassle” or extra costs on families amid pressure from the Conservative right wing to win back voters.
